There will be no more huffin' and puffin' about that $16 muffin.
On Friday, the Justice Department inspector general apologized for claiming in a recent report that taxpayers had paid $16 per muffin at a recent department conference. The IG admitted now that such muffins never existed.

But Friday the IG said it had obtained ?additional documents and information? following the report?s publication in September. After reviewing the data and working with the Capital Hilton hotel ? the site of the conference in question ? the IG wrote in its revised report that ?we determined that our initial conclusions concerning the itemized costs of refreshments at the EOIR conference were incorrect and that the department did not pay $16 per muffin.?
Still, the true cost of the muffins remains unclear.
Originally, the IG had concluded that the department had spent $4,200 for 250 muffins. In the revised report, the IG states the $16 figure was for more than just a muffin. Instead of a mere muffin, the $16 bought ?a modified continental breakfast, which consisted of items such as pastries, fruit, coffee, tea and juice.? The revised report does not break down the individual muffin price.
The initial findings ?brought significant negative publicity? to the Justice Department and the Hilton, the revised report acknowledged. Hilton Worldwide maintained it had never charged $16 per muffin.
?We regret the error in our original report,? the IG stated.
Still, the revised report noted, this correction ?does not detract from the more significant conclusion in our report: Government conference expenditures must be managed carefully, and the department can do more to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and accounted for properly.?
