Pelvic inflammatory disease is a bacterial infection in women, which spreads to the pelvic organs, such as fallopian tubes, uterus, and ovaries. Most women develop this disease as a result of sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea.

Internal reproductive organs are affected as bacteria and other micro-organisms find their way through vagina to the cervix, uterus, ovaries and up to the fallopian tubes. If appropriate medical attention is not provided, the pelvic inflammatory disease spreads through reproductive organs of a girl. It can cause scarring in the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes, which can cause serious complications such as chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and even endometritis.

The symptoms of pelvis inflammatory disease may become worse at the end of a menstrual period or during first several days following a period.

Irregular menstruation periods Many different factors can cause menstrual disorders. These factors include genetic factors, hormonal imbalance, clotting disorders, and pelvic diseases.

Endometritis is a condition, which refers to the inflammation of the endometrium, the mucous lining of the uterus. It affects endometrial stripping, regeneration and repair, and contraction of uterine blood vessels, which leads to irregular menstrual cycle.

Endometritis is caused by an infection due a bacteria known as chlamydia, which is commonly associated with pelvic inflammatory disease or teen pelvic disease. Irregular uterine bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, fever, and pelvic pain are some of the common symptoms.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is asymptomatic in 70 % of women and is often undetected. About 60 % of the cases of acute pelvic inflammatory disease are caused by chlamydial infections. It affects women both physically and psychologically.

Treatment An antibiotic therapy is started under the supervision of a doctor as soon as diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease is completed. Pain medication and IV fluids are given if needed
